Riverside Park has many amenities that are attractive to families, but due to the need to prioritize in times of tight budgets, some items have deteriorated and some work is needed to restore the park to its former glory. The city is in the stages of major improvements and repairs in Riverside Park.
| In Summer 2006, the Janesville City Council dedicated a $30,000 investment to the playground at Riverside Park. In partnership with the Leisure Services department, Friends made recommendations for playground equipment in the south end playground that was completed in Fall 2007. |
| The riverwall south of the boat launch was in desperate need of repair as a portion had collapsed. Work has been completed to repair a portion of the wall. The vertical wall was replaced by a sloping rock wall. | |
Current long range plans call for completing the riverwall replacement and renovating the rest rooms near the south pavilion. The city is also working with a contractor in an attempt to restart the artesian well.
Friends of Riverside Park is in the early planning stages of additional improvements and changes in the park. On the "dream list" are:
- Reopening the wading pool - approved April 2008
- Reopening the upper road - approved April 2008
- Reopening the north bathrooms - approved April 2008
- Renovating the playground near the north pavilion
- Restoring Devil's Staircase access and trail - completed summer/fall 2007
- Extending the Kiwanis Trail / Ice Age Trail through the north end of the park
- Restoring the shuffleboard surfaces - one completed in 2007
- Creating a sand beach and boat pull-up behind the south pavilion
- Opening a small concession stand at the south pavilion to service boaters
Friends of Riverside Park looks forward to a long partnership with the City of Janesville's Leisure Services Department. With the cooperation of public employees and private volunteers, Riverside Park can be restored to its rightful place as Janesville's historic gem, the first regional park in the City of Parks.
