City Council Approves Reopenings
It lasted almost 2 hours, but after all the comments from the public, the presentation by the administration, and the discussion by the council members, the Janesville City Council voted to reopen the upper park road, the wading pool, and the north bathroom building!
There is still a lot of work ahead of us to get them all ready in time for the 85th birthday celebration on June 28th, but the process is now started.
A huge THANK YOU to all who came out to the council meeting tonight in support of Riverside Park. THANK YOU also to the city administration and city council for believing in our vision.

City Council Meeting Tonight
Tonight the Janesville City Council will discuss the reopening of the upper road and the wading pool in Riverside Park. The recommendation from the city administration is to reopen the road (after constructing a suitable barrier to the golf course) and delay the decision on the wading pool until the city wide aquatics discussion occurs again next August. The Janesville Gazette editorial on Sunday was calling for the reopening of both the upper road and the wading pool. The blog and recent poll at gazetteextra.com were filled with positive comments in support of reopening the upper road. The poll (not scientific) showed over 65% in favor of unconditionally reopening the road and less than 15% opposed opening the road at all.
Tonight is the night for the 7 who can make this happen (Janesville City Council) to help us check off another goal as completed. Come out tonight to the meeting at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers, 4th floor of the Munincipal Building to support Riverside Park's renewal.

Saturday, April 12th Lilac Circle. Come help master gardeners trim lilacs in upper park. 8:00-12:00
Saturday, April 19th Mational Youth Service Day. Come help local youth clean up the park. 8:00-12:00
Monday, April 21st Marshall Youth Service Day. Help youth from Marshall Middle School work in the park. 9:30-1:30
Sunday, May 4th Wild Flower Walk. Come walk with Dave Benlin from the Rock County Conservationists. This was a real treat last year as the flowers were fantastic and at their peak. Meet at the north pavilion. 1:00
Saturday, June 28th Riverside Park 85th Birthday Celebration. Come join the community in celebrating 85 years of Riverside Park.

Due to scheduling conflicts, our February meeting will be held February 13th at Commercial Bank Lower level 6:00 PM 1400 Black bridge Road, behind McDonalds. They do have an elevator.
On our normal meeting night, the City of Janesville will hold a public meeting regarding an update to the City’s Parks and Open Space Plan. It is our opportunity to tell the city what plans/priorities we have for Riverside Park in the next 5 years. Again, there is strength in numbers If you have any questions about the meeting Call the Parks Division 755-3025.

There has been more progress on the playground. Some of the equipment is there and the rest is starting to go up. Sand should be placed next week.
One shuffleboard in the north end of the park is painted and ready for use. Equipment can be obtained from the Leisure Services office.
There will be additional work on the Ice Age Trail and vounteers are needed the weekend of October 25-28. This will be to finish up and further refine the work done last July.

September was a busy month for Friends as we supported the Fun Fest( a good time for all) and hosted our 1st Annual Golf Outing. We made it through our first gathering with a positive outcome and found we have many supporters in the golf families. The books show a profit of $2, 915.00 from the golf outing. We have already scheduled next years outing for Friday September 5th. Fun Fest will be the following Saturday September 13th, 2008.
Starting the 1st Wednesday in October the monthly meeting will be held at Commercial Bank Lower level 6:00 PM 1400 Black bridge Road, behind McDonalds. They do have an elevator.

There are also three sets of steps for direct access to the river.
The south playground renovation has begun! This is what sparked the creation of our group over a year ago and now it is becoming a reality! Watch for photos of the progress.
